In the early 1960's Atlanta business leader Jim Clay had a dream of building a world class golf course and bringing a PGA tour even to Atlanta. Jim achieved his goal by being the founder of Atlanta Country Club, which formed in 1964 and opened in 1966. Then, in 1967 the ACC began hosting the "Atlanta Classic". This PGA tour event was held annually at ACC for thirty years, except in 1974 when ACC became the site for the inaugural Tournament Players Championship, won by Jack Nicklaus.
In addition to our involvement in the professional golf the ACC has hosted many amateur events including the USGA Senior Amateur in 1968 and the USGA Women's Amateur in 1971.
The Atlanta Country Club has a rich tradition and history. It is consistently ranked as one of the top golf courses in the country. Originally designed by Willard C. Byrd, the course is built adjacent to historic Sope Creek and Confederate paper mill ruins from the Civil War era. These ruins may be viewed from the signature 13th Hole.
Over the years modifications to the course have been made by Jack Nicklaus, Bob Cupp and most recently Mike Riley. The newest changes came in 2001 with the redesign and renovation of all eighteen of the green complexes.
Since the beginning, our ACC Golf Professionals have exhibited the essence of golf. Davis Love Jr. (1965-1977) was a skilled player and world renowned teacher. John Gerring (1978-1992) is a Master Professional and was 1981 PGA Professional of the year. Bill Johnstone (1993-2009) was a well respected PGA Master Professional. Our newest Head Golf Professional is Scott Schroeder starting in May, 2010. Scott is an experienced Head Professional, an accomplished player and excellent teacher. Rounding out our current Senior Staff are General Manager Imre Hir, who has served ACC since 1972 to the present, Mark Esoda, who has been our Golf Course Superintendent since 1990 and Jim Laughlin our Tennis Professional since 2006. All of these gentlemen are leaders in their respective professions.
Two of our active members, Joe Inman and Larry Nelson, have accomplished the rare feat of winning PGA tour Titles on both the regular and senior tours. In addition, Larry has won 4 major golf championships, was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2006 and was Senior Tour Player of the year in 2000 with Joe being named Senior Tour Rookie of the Year in 1998.
We are proud of our heritage and excited about the future of Atlanta Country Club.
